MEET OUR MAKERS | EDIBLE BEAUTY
This week we had the pleasure of getting to know the effervescent founder of Edible Beauty, Anna Mitsios. Anna was inspired to fill a gap in the market for a line of 100% natural, luxurious skincare products and the Edible Beauty Collection was born. Anna draws on her Naturopathic background to formulate products from botanical and often 'wildcrafted' ingredients that are as pure and close to their natural ‘edible’ state as possible. This philosophy of ‘inside out beauty’ lead Anna to follow up her skincare line with a range of internal Beauty Teas, made from potent blends of therapeutic herbs to further support happy healthy skin.
Anna is a veritable wealth of knowledge when it comes to the 'why' of choosing natural skincare products and she is a true embodiment of radiance from the inside out.
Welcome Anna! What inspired you to start a luxury natural skincare label?
I became inspired to start my own skin care range five years ago when treating clients in my naturopathic practice and seeking a way to improve the management of my own autoimmune condition. It was difficult for me to find products that I could use and recommend that were both 100% natural and also luxurious. I felt there was a need for a product range which was pure enough to be “edible”, but that was also luxurious and a sensual delight to use.
The concept of “edible beauty” developed because I also felt the need to make people aware of the fact that beauty truly does come from the inside. What we put both onto our skin and into our bodies has a lot to do with our outer radiance and glow. Our ‘beauty tea’ and skin care range embodies this philosophy of “inside out beauty” and also reflects my passion and belief in the therapeutic value of botanical herbs, which are abundant in the products.
Edible Beauty is known for using ingredients that are ‘good enough to eat’, why is this important?
Edible is our gold standard of safety as the skin, being the largest organ of the body, absorbs close to 60% of the products that we place on it. Given we absorb such a large percentage of what we put on our skin and the fact that what we put on our skin bypasses our digestive and detoxification systems, what we are putting on our skin becomes just as important as what we are eating.
Studies reveal more than 280 toxins linked to personal care products being found in the umbilical cords of babies which makes what we are putting on our skin even more important in pregnancy and when we are planning conception. The endocrine disrupting effects of ingredients found in our personal care products is of great concern. Xenoestrogens are normally found in the form of parabens and preservatives in skincare products. They lock onto our oestrogen receptor sites and mimic the way that oestrogen works thereby contributing to an excess of oestrogen in the body which will interfere with our efforts to conceive. Perfluorinated chemicals (also known as PFCs) are another sub category of toxins found in skincare which can also impact fertility detrimentally. They have been shown in research to contribute to a range of fertility issues in both men and women. One study conducted by UCLA researcher Chunyuan Fei, and published online in Human Reproduction, states that women with higher-than-normal levels of PFC’s have exhibited a 60-154% higher risk of infertility than those who do not. PFCs have been also shown to affect the fertility of males by decreasing the overall health and motility of their sperm.
Edible Beauty products are not only free of the usual nasties – sulfates, parabens, phthalates etc., they are also free of benzyl alcohol, fragrances, propylene glycol, all preservatives, colours, synthetics and any ingredient that you would not recognise or find in your food. Every ingredient in our products is pure and botanical, and good enough to eat.
We're excited about the Beauty Tea! What skin benefits can you expect from tea?
The key to healthy skin is really taking care of the inside as well as the outside. Our liver health, hormones and free radical damage can all be beauty detractors which is I love being able to provide herbal solutions for the ‘inside’ which work synergistically with our topical. Using teas such as Green Goddess Detox, Fountain of Youth and Golden Glow tea blends can give your liver a boost, balance hormones and reduce inflammation to ensure that your skin is healthy, vibrant and nourished on both the inside and out. These teas target hormonal breakouts, skin redness and provide a boost in vitamin C to support skin brightness and vitality.
How do you self-nourish? Is there a daily ritual you love...
This is definitely my daily morning coastal walk. It is an early start but allows me to practice gratitude for people and events in my life, to breathe in beautiful fresh air and enjoy the spectacular sunrise.
What is one product you cannot live without?
I cannot live without our Sleeping Beauty Purifying Mousse. This is a must have product for me to boost brightness and balance oil production and it works literally overnight. One of my favourite extracts in this product is the Snowflower Seed which has 50 times the antioxidant action of Vitamin C and 100 times that of Vitamin C. This ingredient is an Australian native and is such an incredible example of how potent and therapeutic these wildcrafted ingredients are. It is nourishing, anti-inflammatory and a beautiful ingredient for brightening the skin.
Any winter must-haves for dry, thirsty skin?
Our No.1 Belle Frais Cleansing Milk is an ultra-hydrating cleansing milk, it purifies the skin without stripping it of its natural oils which is so important at all times but more so during winter. The natural AHAs in this products (Apple, Lime, Strawberry Extracts) ensure skin cell turnover is being stimulated and also keep the skin bright and nourished. The second product which I find is wonderful is our Desert Lime Flawless Face Micro-Exfoliant – it contains rice enzymes which help to lift dry and dead skin cells along with gingko which stimulates circulation to the skin, ensuring that skin cell turnover is being supported – it reveals very smooth and bright skin after just one application. I love serums and oils, especially during winter. They provide potent extracts which can intensely hydrate the skin. Our Snowflower Illuminating Face Oil is an 100% Organic oil blend that contains Australian wildcrafted ingredients which are rich in antioxidants and flavone glycosides like Banksia Seed and Kakadu Plum Seed along with Jojoba oil which mimics the natural wax esters of the skin for ultra hydration. Using the oil after exfoliating ensures that these extracts absorb deeply into the skin.
What does living consciously mean to you?
Conscious living means living with an awareness of our earth, wildlife and fellow humans and the implication of our actions on them. It means living with a level of compassion and caring that is expressed by treating other people and our Earth with loving kindness and graciously giving of ourselves and our resources. This is the most important principle which underpins my decisions and actions in life.
