The concepts of free radicals, antioxidants and adaptogens are common place in today's society - but how much do we really know about them? And how much do we need to know?

Our James Street showroom Manager Stacey Scott has a background in clinical nutrition, which comes in very handy when discussing the multiple edible beauty options we have in-store.

Here, she takes us on a step-by-step journey, explaining exactly what you need to know!



When molecules oxidise in the body they become free radicals, or cellular by-products. They are an uncharged molecule that creates damage to the human body by oxidising our system more rapidly, leaving us more vulnerable to disease, illness and inflammation.

"It is very normal to have free radicals within the body, but in excess they can wreak havoc on our cellular structures. Antioxidants help prevent the free radical damage, slow down the ageing process and increase longevity," says Stacey.

Which leads us to…



There are three primary types of antioxidants found in nature - Phytochemicals, vitamins and enzymes.

"Antioxidants are a substance in the form of an enzyme or vitamin that reduces damage due to oxidation that has been caused by free radicals. They are capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidisation, and slowing the progression of ageing."

Let's talk about foods that have antioxidant properties… Polyphenols are micronutrients in food that have antioxidant activity. Many common plant sources contain rich sources of polyphenols, such as cinnamon, oregano, turmeric, cumin, parsley, mustard seed, ginger, chilli, coriander, onion, basil, dill, thyme and many more... (Flavonoids are a subset of polyphenol antioxidants, that are present in many berries as well as coffee and tea.)

Vitamin C is a water-soluble compound that is found in citrus fruits, capsicum, broccoli, green leafy veg, black currents strawberries, blueberries, raw cabbage and tomatoes.

Vitamin E is fat soluble vitamin that protects lipids. It is found in most whole grains, nuts seeds, fish liver oil, as well as green leafy veg and kiwi fruit.

Vitamin A is synthesised by the body from beta carotene - fat soluble vitamin - and protects us from solar radiation damage. It can be found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables.



Adaptogens are non-toxic ancient healers; "Basically, they are herbs or medicinal mushrooms that help your body respond to any influence or stressor, to normalise your physiological functions. They are great for battling stress and boosting your overall immunity, strength and resilience," says Stacey.

With the correct inclusion of an Adaptogen into your diet or added in supplementation form, it can work to restore/ optimise/and or manage imbalances, deficiencies and/ or excesses. Adaptogens are extremely potent, and are not a one-size-fits-all scenario. Remember to be safe, and work with the intention of reducing the body's stress response and support overall health by helping the body achieve balance.
