Face masks can do wonders when used correctly to remedy a particular skin concern. But how do you know what mask will best suit your skin and concerns without a lot of trial and error? Luckily, opting for natural face masks will at least reduce your risk of irritation - but this doesn’t make it any easier when it comes to choosing which one. Some brighten, some detoxify and cleanse, and some offer hydration, while others might be designed to target specific areas of the face.

Need some help? Here’s our guide to choosing the right natural face masks for your specific skin concerns.

Dry Skin

If you are prone to dry skin - whether it’s during the winter months or all year round - there are certain ingredients to look out for in natural face masks. Humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe vera are ingredients that help retain moisture. Other ingredients to look out for include plant oils, butters and Vitamin E. At conscious.kin, our top pick for ultimate skin nourishment is the Sodashi Plant Essence Replenish Mask. Using a blend of botanical extracts such as Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, and oils like Rosehip and Gotu-Kula, this face mask is not only deeply nourishing, but it also targets fine lines and reduces hyperpigmentation. Use this mask once a week by applying a big teaspoon of product over the face, neck and décolletage. Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes before removing it with a damp cloth.

Acne-Prone or Oily Skin

Those who experience regular breakouts and clogged pores may find detoxifying and cleansing masks beneficial. Our skin is often exposed to pollution, the sun and sweat, so it is important remove any impurities and excess oils. Clay masks are the best natural face masks to use for both acne-prone and oily skin concerns. Look out for clay varieties such as Kaolin and Bentonite in your face mask. The Mukti Organics Deep Cleanse Antioxidant Mask with Kaolin uses bioactive native extracts like Kakadu Plum, and an enzyme-exfoliating complex to help purify and cleanse the skin without drying it out. You can use this mask 1 to 2 times a week by applying a generous layer to dry skin. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water and a cloth.

Dull Skin

Dull, lacklustre skin is a concern for many people, particularly during the cooler months. If you are looking at natural face masks to revitalise and rejuvenate the skin, then you may need a brightening mask.  Ingredients like Vitamin E found in almond and macadamia oil, and Vitamin C are essential ingredients for achieving glowing skin. Rosewood Oil is also another ingredient that supports the regeneration of skin cells and the elasticity of the skin for that all-important glow. To brighten your dull and tired skin, try the Sodashi Brightening Marine Mineral Mask. It not only lightens and brightens your complexion, but it also contains clay to detoxify your skin. Apply a big teaspoon of product over the face, neck and décolletage, leave for 15 minutes and remove with a damp cloth.

Eye Area

Natural face masks are not just for the entire face. You can also find ones that target a specific area, in this case, your eyes. Not only is the skin around the eye delicate and thinner than the rest of the face, it is not able to absorb as much moisture; enter fine lines, dark circles and puffy eyes. The Sodashi Eye Mask helps to reduce all of these concerns. This product contains ingredients such as chamomile to strengthen the skin’s elasticity, Rosewood oil to brighten the skin, and Gotu-Kola to promote circulation. Using your ring finger, lightly tap a small amount around the eye area, both under and on the lid and leave for 15 minutes. Gently remove the mask with either a damp cloth or cotton pad.
