Introducing Gemma Vendetta
In the next of our blog series introducing the faces behind the brands you see (and maybe have started using and loving as part of your daily routine) is Gemma Vendetta. Her range has also just been accredited by Choose Cruelty Free Australia as cruelty free and vegan makeup. Gemma, who hails from Adelaide, is the talented face and brains behind Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics. It’s one of our go-to BB Creams and Beck is a devotee to Gemma’s 2-in-1 bronzer / blush - she wears it almost daily! We’re so lucky to have Gemma coming to Organic Index for our Mother’s Day events on May 13th and 14th So, before we welcome Gemma to Brisbane, settle in to read our Q&A with Gemma and get to know the woman behind the brand! Gemma Vendetta Comsetics[/caption] Organic Index (OI): What was the inspiration for Gemma Vendetta the brand? Gemma Vendetta (GV): In 2007, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, the very next day I vouched that I would do my best to live every day as best I could. When I wake up and I'm pain free, I'm thankful. When I wake up and I know I'm making the best life I can, for the time I'm well, I know that I'm making a positive difference to the ideal of what it's like to live with a chronic autoimmune disease. When I became a qualified makeup artist, I became increasingly aware of the toxins we're exposed to each and every day. I didn't want to tolerate this as the industry norm, so after realising that Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics would have it's place, I decided to create a cruelty free, non-toxic, mineral, vegan makeup range, that performed at a professional level. OI: What's your favourite product in the range and why? GV: It's so hard to choose just one! But besides the flexibility and usability of the BB/CC Cream, my favourite product would be the 2-in-1 Bronzer/Blush. It goes such a long way, it's creamy, yet it still a pressed powder. I use it to add glamour and interest under the water line on my lower lash line, I use it as an eyeshadow, and I just love the effortless, sun-kissed look it gives my face! OI: Tell us a bit about your background and what you were doing before you launched the range? GV: I'm a qualified hairdresser and makeup artist, before I launched the range, I had worked as a brand representative, and skincare consultant for a leading Australian skincare company. I'm also a full-time single mum, to my most wonderful 6yr old son, and 'in another life' I was a school teacher, and visual artist! OI: What are your three top tips for a glowing, natural everyday look? GV: 1) Always wash your face, never sleep in your makeup, and moisturise every day, without fail. 2) Drink plenty of water. Your body is your temple, and whatever goes in, will show on your skin! 3) If you don't like wearing a lot of makeup, you can get a glowing, natural everyday look by simply using the Gemma Vendetta 2:1 Bronzer/Blush, as a blush, and an eyeshadow, and then following that with lashings of mascara. OI: What advice do you have for people wanting to make the switch to cleaner beauty products? GV: Firstly, well done for considering a change! Your body and health will thank you for it! Secondly, I'd recommend replacing 1 - 2 of your usual products (the Gemma Vendetta BB/CC Cream is the perfect starting point, as you can use this as a primer, as a tinted moisturiser, and as a buildable foundation, too!) , before you make the full change. Natural products may 'act' or perform a little differently than mainstream, chemical based cosmetics. It's recommended that you stay open-minded and not be deterred by learning a new technique of application. OI: How do you continue to take care of yourself and your health while running a busy and growing business? GV: It's really important to schedule 'time off', I'm well-aware that my entrepreneur mindset means that I sometimes find it hard to shut off from my busy and growing business, mainly because I live it, and I love it so much! Work is my life, and I've made Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics my life. My favourite time, outside of GVC is the 1:1 playtime I get with my son. I also like to allocate time to have coffee/tea/chai with friends, at least one morning per week, and I like to make time to walk along the beach in bare feet whilst listening to binaural beats. My goal this year is to 'treat myself' to a cleaner! OI: Top 5 products you're currently loving? GV: I advocate for, and use Australian/NZ made and owned, natural products, in my personal regime. My 5 product loves are: Antipodes NZ Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream, Gemma Vendetta The Vendetta vegan mineral lipstick, The Jojoba Company Jojoba Bead Facial Cleanser, Kindred Self Essential Oil Collection and Kosmea Organic Rosehip Oil. OI: What's next for Gemma Vendetta? GV: This year, I will be expanding the range to include a mascara (due to popular demand), and eyeshadow palettes!
